An Introduction to Energy Storage for the Electricity Grid

Wednesday, January 11, 2012 1:00pm - 2:30pm EST
Host: Infocast

Energy storage is poised to be a primary element of the electric grid of the future and an important source of value in the emerging electricity marketplace. Key drivers of the storage opportunity include: 1) bulk electric generation resources that are less flexible and more variable, 2) more competitive markets with richer wholesale pricing for a growing number of grid services, 3) smarter, more robust and more optimized transmission and distribution systems, 4) increased use of modular, greener distributed energy resources, 5) loads that are more controlled and price-responsive, 6) more empowered electricity end-users with more alternatives and richer retail pricing and 7) increasing emphasis on fuel efficiency, resource conservation and reduced air emissions.

This 90 minute webinar provides an introduction to key facets of the electric energy storage opportunity. It is based, in part, on a report published by Sandia National Laboratories and authored by Mr. Eyer entitled Energy Storage for the Electricity Grid: Benefits and Market Potential Assessment Guide (report # SAND2010-0815)

Attendees should expect to acquire a high level familiarity with:

  • The multifaceted nature of the energy storage opportunity
  • Storage technology types and characteristics
  • Important drivers of the electricity storage opportunity
  • Key challenges affecting prospects for wide-scale deployment of storage
  • Introduction to the array of storage benefits that comprise building blocks for attractive energy storage value propositions
  • Introduction to notable existing and emerging energy storage value propositions
