The solar market has a long history of volatility and chaos, and 2012 is no exception. The drivers are well known: Shift of supply from Europe to Asia, significant scale-up of multiple players, and changes in some of the underlying regulatory framework designed to grow and sustain the industry. The results are equally clear and have led to significant over supply of crystalline modules, and enormous downward shift in module prices as well as company valuations of producers. Equally hard hit are the equipment and material companies that serve the module manufacturers.

However, in some areas there are glimmers of hope and even shining stars. Innovation continues to be rewarded with private equity investment, and contracts to deliver.
